This art piece was created by Franco Mpagi, a young Ugandan artist who was inspired by the collaboration of African women to make music in times of sorrow and times of Joy. Music has the power to change or enhance the mood of anyone. In Africa and the world over, it is an integral part of society.

We have seen the power of art/creativity through music where during the early COVID-19 pandemic, Italians who were in lock down belted out tunes from the balconies spreading hope not just to the people in those apartments but the world over. The world took a cue from there and before we knew ,different cities were engaged in singing and dancing all the while practising the ever needed social distancing.
Alya Kempis in her post,” Why art has the power to change the world” exposes how art spurs thinking, engagement and even action. Art has the power to move people and offer new experiences no matter the type of art. With art, one is able to assist people to understand the physical reality as well as the imaginary world. Art inspires us to appreciate instinct, improbability, and imagination to pursue continually for new notions.
When I look at the art piece above, I am reminded that I am not alone. That we are one people. There is a South African proverb-” Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu”. It means “I am, because you are or humanity towards others.” This Ubuntu speaks to the fact that we are connected and that one can only grow and progress through the growth and progression of others.
That’s the power of art- to remind us that we are one, different stories yes but in the end, we are one. Imagine a world where there is an amalgamation of all these unique stories where we all read from the same novel and see ourselves in others. Yes, that’s the power of art to change perspectives ~I am because you are. That’s who I am. This is me!
